Facial Nerve Paralysis in a rope horse post-trauma. The most serious aspect to damage to this nerve is the inability to blink decreasing the protective mechanism of the closing of the eye lids. This horse presented with a concurrent melting ulcer of the eye as a consequence.

Equine Dentistry

Dr. Candice Carden performing a complete mouth exam on a race horse
A complete dental exam is performed by a licensed veterinarian and the teeth are corrected using power and hand tools under sedation. Horses should be checked once a year unless there are circumstances which require more frequent exams.

Importance of Veterinary Dentistry

The horse pictured to the right has unilateral nasal discharge caused by a dental tumor in the left maxilla. Extensive surgery was required but this horse is doing great and back to roping again!

The majority of lameness in horses can be attributed to issues with the foot.   It is important to have good foot care to keep your horse feeling his or her best!

This is a lateral radiograph of a horse with severely overgrown soles. There was contraction of the heels (indicative of heel pain). Before digging further into all of the issues causing this horse pain, corrective shoeing was instilled to lay a proper foundation for soundness

Insulin resistant miniature donkeys
These obese donkeys are suffering from Equine Metabolic Syndrome. This is a complex disease that involves insulin resistance and pituitary dysfunction, but can be treated through highly managed conditions and with medicine. Horses with cresty necks and/or hairy coats may have a component of this disease which makes them susceptible to laminitis. A veterinarian can run appropriate tests and figure out best game plan for your animals.

Bucking Stock Horses

Picture
MTVA provides the official veterinary services for the American Bucking Horse Registry. Bucking stock horses take more patience and better handling facilities than do other breeds of horses. Luckily they are generally much heartier and have better immunity than a lot of horse breeds, but they still may need handling for Coggins, castration, or injury. Younger, less seasoned animals are more likely to be injured with handling, as well. If you have bucking stock horses, please call us and we can assist you in your veterinary needs.
